Lots of music fans would pay for a live performance by Aerosmith axman Joe Perry. Many more would file in for Alice Cooper and his brand of macabre rock. And, despite his current tabloid exploits, hundreds of anyone would likely buy tickets to see actor/sometimes guitarist Johnny Depp do nothing more than stand idle and recite lines from 1990’s “Edward Scissorhands.”
But thanks to the trio’s union as the hard-rocking Hollywood Vampires — set to appear July 9 outdoors at Seneca Niagara Casino (310 Fourth St., Niagara Falls) — fans of all three can see them on the same stage, dealing in the currency of covers to raise the Brandy Alexander-hoisting ghosts of rock and roll’s past.
Named after Cooper’s 1970s celebrity drinking club — featuring the likes of the Who’s Keith Moon, Harry Nilsson and, dependent on the week, John Lennon — the group is now in the middle of 18-date North American tour behind work off its homage-heavy self-titled debut. Packed with nuanced, hard-rock interpretations of past favorites by such luminaries as Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, the effort attempts to honor men Cooper lovingly refers to as his “dead drunk friends.”
Intermixing these odes on stage with work from Cooper’s catalog, Perry’s Aerosmith and Depp’s composition notebook should make the casino gig interesting — as well as earn notice as the summer’s most promising tribute show.
